What Are Specialist Medicals?

Specialist medicals are tailored assessments that evaluate an individual’s fitness for specific, safety-critical job roles. Unlike a standard health screen, these medicals are designed to meet industry-specific regulations and requirements. Assessments can be conducted at one of our clinics or on-site and often include a detailed medical questionnaire, physical examination, and specific tests based on the role.

Common types of specialist medicals include:

  • HGV/LGV/PCV Medical (D4): To meet DVLA Group 2 standards for professional drivers.

  • Confined Space Medical: To ensure employees can safely work in restrictive environments.

  • Forklift Medical: To ensure drivers are medically fit to operate heavy machinery safely.

Questions

Specialist medicals are tailored to meet specific, often statutory, industry standards. They are typically more complex, requiring specific tests (like spirometry or a fitness test) and, in some cases, must be performed by a specially approved Occupational Health Physician (OHP). The prices reflect this increased complexity, expertise, and time required.
Yes, for many safety-critical roles, these medicals are a legal requirement under Health and Safety legislation. For example, the HSE mandates regular medical surveillance for employees who work with asbestos, and DVLA regulations govern the medical standards for professional drivers (HGV/LGV).
To ensure the process is as smooth as possible, we ask that employees complete our detailed medical questionnaire in advance. We also highly recommend that they bring any relevant medical information, such as prescriptions, test results, or a recent Full Medical Examination (FME) report if they have one.
If an employee is found to be medically unfit for a specific role, we will provide a clear and confidential report to the employer. This report will outline the reasons for the outcome and may include recommendations for reasonable adjustments or alternative work arrangements that could allow the employee to perform their duties safely.
