What is a Safety Critical Medical?

A Safety Critical Medical is a specialised occupational health assessment designed for employees who perform tasks where their physical or mental health is vital to the safety of themselves, their colleagues, and the general public. If an individual in one of these roles were to suffer a sudden loss of consciousness or physical impairment (such as a seizure or vision failure), it could lead to a catastrophic incident.

Unlike a standard GP check-up, this medical specifically focuses on the “fitness for task” requirements mandated by the Health and Safety at Work Act and guidelines set by bodies like Constructing Better Health (CBH) and the HSE.

Questions

Yes. Our assessments are designed to meet the rigorous safety-critical standards set by the HSE and are fully compliant with the “Fit for Task” requirements used by major UK construction sites and infrastructure projects. We ensure your operatives meet the medical criteria necessary for high-risk environments.
We understand that time is money on a project. In most cases, we provide a digital same-day certificate immediately following the assessment, provided the operative meets the required health standards. This allows for instant site access and minimal downtime.
Our comprehensive screening includes a health questionnaire, blood pressure and pulse check, urinalysis, vision screening (including color vision), audiometry (hearing test), spirometry (lung function), and a musculoskeletal mobility check to ensure the operative is physically capable of the role.
All assessments are clinician-led. They are performed by qualified occupational health professionals or GMC-registered doctors with specific experience in occupational medicine. This ensures the results are clinically robust and legally defensible.
A “fail” doesn’t always mean the end of work. We provide clear, actionable feedback. If an issue is found (e.g., high blood pressure), we may issue a “temporary unfit” status with advice on how to resolve the issue with their GP, or a “fit with restrictions” certificate to keep them working safely in a limited capacity.

We offer both. While we have dedicated clinic spaces, we specialise in on-site delivery. We can bring our medical equipment to your premises or site office to test multiple employees in one day, which significantly reduces travel costs and productivity loss for your business.
