What is a Forklift Driver Medical and Why is it Required?

The assessment covers general health, vision, hearing, blood pressure, and any medical conditions that may affect safe operation of forklift machinery. It is based on DVLA Group 1 or Group 2 medical standards (depending on employer risk assessment) similar to those required for car drivers.

Questions

All forklift operators should undergo a medical to ensure they meet the minimum Group 1 driver standards, as advised by the HSE. This applies to new starters, periodic reviews, and where there are health changes that might affect safe operation.
  • Pre-employment or initial medical: Before starting work as a forklift operator.
  • Every 3 years until age 50: Depending on company policy and age.
  • Annually from age 65: Or more frequently if there are health concerns.
  • Health Status Change: After any significant change in health status.
Typically 15–20 minutes, depending on your medical history.
  • Photo ID: Driving licence or passport.
  • Medical Records: Details of current medications or medical conditions.
  • Vision Aids: Glasses or contact lenses if worn for vision.
Many medical conditions can be safely managed with appropriate treatment and reporting. The doctor will record relevant details and assess whether you meet the minimum fitness standards. In some cases, further evidence may be requested before issuing a fitness certificate.
While there is no specific legal requirement for a “forklift medical” by name, HSE guidance (L117) requires employers to ensure operators are medically fit to operate machinery safely. Using DVLA Group 1 standards is the accepted best practice.
You will usually receive your medical fitness certificate at the end of your appointment, which can be provided to your employer as evidence of fitness to operate a forklift.
