What Is a Occupational Health Assessment?

An occupational health assessment is an independent medical evaluation conducted by a specialist doctor or nurse to understand how an employee’s health affects their ability to do their job—and conversely, how their job affects their health.

Instead of diagnosing or treating a condition like a GP would, at Work Doctor OH, our occupational health professional focuses purely on the relationship between health and work. Our goal is to provide actionable advice so that the employee can work safely and effectively.

Questions

An assessment usually takes the form of a consultation—either in person, over the phone, or via video call. The clinician will discuss the employee’s medical history, current symptoms, and how their health is impacting their daily work. It is a supportive conversation aimed at finding practical solutions, not a test to “catch them out.”
Yes, an employee must provide informed consent to participate in an assessment. However, it is usually in their best interest to attend. If they refuse, the employer may have to make decisions about their capability and employment based solely on the limited information they already have, without the benefit of expert medical advice.
The report is strictly confidential. Before it is sent to the employer (usually the line manager or HR department), the employee has the right to see the report first and must consent to its release. The report will not contain granular, private medical details; it will only share what is strictly necessary regarding fitness for work and recommended adjustments.
Yes, in a workplace context. An occupational health professional specializes specifically in workplace health and ergonomics. While a GP might sign an employee off sick, an occupational health expert might identify that with specific “reasonable adjustments”—such as modified hours or different equipment—the employee is actually fit to return to work safely.
Under the UK Equality Act 2010, employers must make reasonable adjustments to ensure an employee with a disability is not substantially disadvantaged. An occupational health assessment will recommend specific changes, such as providing ergonomic furniture, altering working hours, allowing remote work, or modifying specific physical duties.
